In this serious game for biology classes, you become an immune cell fighting against dangerous pathogens.
A dangerous virus has entered the body through an open wound! But the human organism has a powerful weapon: the immune system.
In our serious game “Total Vervirrt”, you take on the role of different immune cells and defend the body with both brains — and action!

Background
As part of our third-semester project, we were tasked with creating a serious game in collaboration with the school in Herrsching. We decided to develop a game that supports biology lessons and focuses on the human immune system.
I was responsible for creating the entire environment, including environmental animations, UI, particles and shader.
We began by creating different variations of the art style. During this process, we stayed in close communication with the school and its students. After conducting several surveys with the students and feedback from the teacher, we ultimately decided on a “CarlArts”-inspired art style.

The content creation process was fairly linear. I started by taking the level design provided by our game designer and creating multiple sketches based on it. The different areas of the game were inspired by organs that are vital to the human immune system. My goal was to visually represent each organ’s key characteristics in the environment design.

I was not only responsible for creating the environments, but also for designing the UI. My goal was to develop an easy-to-understand interface that clearly communicates that the game takes place inside the human body, while still fitting the context of a biology class. I ultimately chose a red color palette for the background panels and created colorful interaction buttons and mini-game related UI that reflect each cell’s abilities and personality.
